Flying

Seagull, bird, flying, Laguna Beach

I caught this seagull in the act of flying, you can see him push of the small hill in order to gain the momentum needed to lift himself. As for shooting technique, I was using a telephoto lens at 200m and laying flat on my stomach on the sand but I the two most important factors are:

  1. Setting your focus system to AI Servo (for Canon) or AF-C (for Nikon, Sony and Pentax) and…
  2. Picking the right focus point to anticipate the bird’s motion.

The focus system will help you keep the image sharp as the bird begins to move, while the focus point will directly impact the composition of your final image: don’t forget to anticipate the motion. In this case, I wanted to give the sense of flying away, considering that the bird was staring to the left I expected him to fly that way so I picked the furthest focus point to the left to leave some trailing space once he started to fly.

Setting the shooting mode to continuous will help specially if you have a higher camera that is capable of taking multiple frames per second but I don’t think its as important as getting your focus “right”. To be honest, I had mine set on continuous but I only took one image and this was it :)

Its all about the light

I really got into photography about three years ago and one of the first things I said: “I want a DSLR that takes really nice pictures, with amazing saturated colors but I don’t need a professional camera!”. My friend told me at the time, buy a cheap camera, a good lens and learn how to capture light and thats how you will learn photography. I rolled my eyes and I stuck to my guns, light? I don’t want to be a pro, I just want to take nice pictures! Ironically, the roles are reversed now; when I get asked I preach the importance of light yet no one takes me seriously :)

After a year of shooting I started to notice the importance

Reflecting Back

When the water recedes around sunset, it creates a nice glare on the sand that makes it act like a mirror. I tried to get the seagull to look right though the lens but it wanted to keep a safe distance from me, so I ended up taking an image of it reflecting back :) This was taken back at La Jolla Shores.
