2012Matter of inches
This is an image that I took over a year ago around the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at UCSD. I tried to stand in the middle of the path and have the sunburst off to the side to fill the empty sky. I kept on fiddling around with my camera position until I could eliminate the lens flare since I was using such a small aperture; I think once you get into the f/11 and above range you need to watch out for the sun flares. In this case I had my aperture to f/13 so it was moving it for a few inches and all was good

You’re welcome.

Cool – did you by chance study geophysics?

No, I studied Mechanical Engineering so there was a a lot physics but not much geology

Excellent shot. I love the sunflare and how you’ve composed the whole image.

Amazing shot…. I know how tough it can be to shoot into the sun. Love it.

That looks like the stairway/elevator that goes down to street level so one can get to the Scripps Institute of Oceanography.
On another thought, have you ever set the exposure compensation to -2 or -3 for a picture like that? I do it all the time, and it creates some beautiful sunset pictures without waiting around for the sun to actually set. Saves hours sometimes!

Yes that is that elevator
As for the exposure compensation, this is an HDR of 6 images [-3,-2,-1,0,+1,+2] so that was included in it. I do know what you are referring to but I seldom use it as sunsets = HDR for me 99.9% of the time

In what program do you do your HDR. I’m just now starting to explore it.

Photomatix is King… all the others are a waste of time in my humble opinion. Any questions you have about it, just ask
Even if you want, one day we can go grab a coffee at starbucks or something and I’ll show you how I go about them.

I like the ‘twin suns’, they balance very well.

Great perspective! I too had such instances where just a few inches mattered to capture a good photograph!
